OUR JOURNEY

From our HQ in the heart of the Cheshire hills, we’ve been producing chemicals since 1874. Now one of Europe’s leading producers of sodium carbonate, salt and sodium bicarbonate, we’re also the UK’s only manufacturer of soda ash and sodium bicarbonate. You could say that we’re one of a kind!

POWERING LIFE’S ESSENTIALS

Our high quality soda ash is used globally, across various industries and in the manufacture of glass, detergents and chemicals. Our many grades of sodium bicarbonate have applications ranging from haemodialysis and pharmaceuticals to food and animal feed, flue gas treatments through to detergents and personal care products.

AN EXTENDED FAMILY

Our British Salt business is very much part of the Tata Chemicals Europe family, and is the UK’s leading salt business, producing 400,000 tonnes of pure white salt for our customers every year! It’s then used for a variety of uses from food, water-softening, and industrial uses through to de-icing.

OUR ETHOS

Founded in science, deep rooted in values and driven forward by our amazing people. Here at Tata Chemicals Europe, we’re committed to delivering premium products with excellent customer care, while also caring for our local community and environment at the same time.

OUR STORY SO FAR…

You could say our long and rich history makes us something of a local institution. We’re really proud of our deep Cheshire roots, which are the perfect grounding for our international outlook.

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Let us take you back to 1874, when John Brunner and Dr Ludwig Mond established our first plant in Winnington, Northwich. Over the years the business grew, both organically and through a series of acquisitions, eventually becoming a founder member of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in 1926, which we remained a member of until 1991 after our divestment as ‘Brunner Mond’.

ACQUISITION AND GROWTH

Brunner Mond UK Limited and its Kenyan subsidiary the Magadi Soda Company were then acquired by Tata Chemicals Limited in 2005, and in 2011 Tata Chemicals Europe and Tata Chemicals Magadi were born.

NEW HORIZONS

2011 was a busy year for us here at TCE and British Salt officially became part of the family. A blended team of experts from across both salt production and chemical manufacturing we can now offer our customers more and grow into new, exciting markets.

THE FUTURE LOOKS GREEN…

Our evolution has gathered some serious pace in recent years. From the advent of the world’s first standalone sodium bicarbonate plant, the acquisition of one of Europe’s most efficient gas-fired combined heat and power plants, as well as the UK’s first carbon capture and utilisation plant and the commissioning of a £6m steam turbine generating green electricity for our own operations and the National Grid – you could say that we’ve done our bit. But we’re not stopping there. We continue to remain dedicated to our journey towards Net Zero and sustainability remains firmly at the top of our agenda.
